Shopping for shutters in Brisbane? There’s more variety than most people expect, and the right choice depends on where you live, your home’s style, and what you’re actually trying to achieve. Here’s what you need to know before you buy.

Types of shutters available in Brisbane

Plantation shutters

Plantation shutters are the most popular indoor shutter choice in Brisbane. Wide adjustable louvres control light and airflow beautifully without fully closing the shutter, and they suit almost every home style, from heritage Queenslanders in Bulimba and Hawthorne to modern builds throughout the city.

They’re actually one of the few window coverings that can add genuine value at resale, which makes them a considered investment rather than just a nice finish to your home.

There are four options in the indoor range, each sitting at a different price point and performance level.

  • Thermalite is the most popular. It’s a Queensland-made polymer shutter that insulates well, is completely moisture and termite-resistant, and comes with a 25-year transferable warranty. Plus, they look and feel like wood.
  • Highprofile Poly gives you that same great look as plantation shutters, but in PVC. It’s great for wet areas and everyday use, and comes in at a more accessible price.
  • Highprofile Elements uses a timber frame with PVC blades. It’s a hybrid that gives you the best of both worlds. It has wider panels for that classic look, without the weight of full timber.
  • Highprofile Classic is the full timber option. It’s beautiful in character homes and is built to last. It does require more care in Brisbane’s humid conditions, particularly near the coast, but for the right home, it’s a genuinely beautiful product.

Exterior and aluminium shutters

Exterior shutters – also called external shutters – mount on the outside of the home and block heat before it even reaches the glass. That distinction matters, as a room with exterior shutters on a west-facing window will feel meaningfully cooler than one relying on indoor coverings alone.

Aluminium is the go-to material for exterior applications in Brisbane. It handles humidity, UV, and coastal salt air well, requires no painting or sealing, and can be powder coated to match your home’s exterior.

For bayside suburbs like Victoria Point, Wellington Point, and Wynnum, aluminium with quality corrosion-resistant hardware is generally the most sensible long-term choice.

Outdoor shutters

Outdoor shutters are designed for patios, decks, and entertainment areas rather than windows. The right system gives you control over light, privacy, and airflow, and turns a space you only use a few months of the year into one you can genuinely enjoy year-round. See our outdoor shutters page for the specific options available.

How much do shutters cost in Brisbane?

Our entry-level PVC plantation shutters start from $460 for a 1200mm x 1200mm window, including GST and installation.

That’s a guide only. Every shutter we install is custom-made to your window, so a few things will shape your final price:

  • The type of shutter, from PVC and polymer through to full timber or aluminium
  • The size of your windows
  • How many panels you need and how they open
  • Reveal depth and frame material

Brisbane-specific considerations

Brisbane’s climate places genuine demands on window coverings that more temperate cities don’t face to the same degree. Heat and UV exposure are relentless year-round, and Queensland’s humidity is hard on poorly maintained materials.

For indoor shutters, poly and PVC options handle moisture incredibly well and need very little upkeep. In saying that, timber indoor shutters work beautifully, but they do need proper sealing and regular care to stay in good shape. The choice here is the look you’re after and the care you’re willing to put in to achieve it long-term.

For exterior applications, powder-coated aluminium is built to last decades in our climate. If your property is in a bayside suburb such as Victoria Point, Wellington Point, Wynnum, Redland Bay, we recommend that all hardware, hinges, and frames are specifically corrosion-resistant. PVC and powder-coated aluminium hold up well near the water; however, standard chrome or steel components won’t.

Brisbane’s summer storms are also worth factoring in if you’re considering exterior shutters. Aluminium exterior shutters provide meaningful protection during high-wind events, but products vary.

We’ll always suggest products that work for your home, your area and the weather conditions, ensuring they can stand up to Brisbane’s weather for years to come.

Energy efficiency

Plantation shutters create an additional layer of insulation at the window, reducing heat transfer in both directions. Exterior shutters go further by blocking solar heat before it reaches the glass, which is most effective for rooms with significant sun exposure.

We won’t put specific figures on energy savings, because these vary too much based on your home’s orientation, glazing, and how you use the shutters. What we can say from over 30 years of installations in the area is that the difference is noticeable, particularly in rooms that previously had nothing on the windows.

The installation process

Our window shutters are custom-made to fit your home, so our process always starts with a free on-site measure and quote. We assess window sizes, reveal depth, and any unusual configurations before anything is ordered. Bay windows, arched windows, and non-standard frames can all be accommodated, but they take more planning at that measure and quote stage.

Once approved, our shutters are manufactured to your specifications. Installation typically takes a few hours to a full day, and everything is fitted and tested before our team leaves.

One thing worth checking beforehand: if you’re in a heritage overlay area or a body corporate property, then you may need council approval or strata sign-off before you commit. We’ll let you know if we think this may need looking into.
